surrender

I Must Decrease (John 7:18)

“He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” (John 7:18)

A few weeks back I asked my 10-year old daughter to pray over me, as I was leading our church’s worship team to prepare for Christmas Service. Out of all of the wonderful things she prayed for, one of the things I remember vividly is when she said, “God, prepare Daddy’s heart so that he isn’t doing this to impress anyone, but that he is only doing this to worship You.” (more…)

In His Hands (Psalm 138:6-8)

“Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever- do not abandon the works of your hands.” (Psa. 138:6-8)

Although my family is going through a worrisome situation with my wife’s health right now, the Lord is faithful to send daily reminders through His Word that He is walking with us, and will not leave us nor forsake us! (more…)

My Soul Waits (Psalm 130:5-6)

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (Psa. 130:5-6)

This is a moving comparison to watchmen or sentinels, whose job was to laboriously watch and guard throughout the night, from dusk till dawn. The author captures the weight of their weariness and burden as he repeats “more than watchmen wait for the morning… more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (more…)

Where Does Our Strength Come From? (Psalm 75:9-10)

“As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.” (Psa. 75:9-10)

I thought the use of the word “horns” in that chapter was interesting, so I looked up the word in the original Hebrew text. The word is “qeren”, denoting power and strength. (more…)

Total Surrender

“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

This is such a hard topic. Many of us are afraid of what “total surrender” to God looks like in our lives. We imagine God telling us to sell everything we have, move to a third world country, sleep in huts, live off berries and insects, and be international missionaries in the jungle. For some reason that seems to be the most popular illustration of “total surrender” that I hear Christians talk about, which makes sense because it’s one of the more dramatic ways to transition into full-time ministry. It scares us though, because we don’t want to give up the comfort or control of our lives. (more…)
