Proper Expectations (John 15:7)

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.” (John 15:7)

Last weekend I casually prayed that the Dallas Cowboys might win their divisional play-off game against the L.A. Rams, primarily for selfish reasons; that I would have more rooting opportunities enjoying a Cowboys’ game with my kids. It didn’t happen- prayer definitely not answered.

Presenting our requests to God through prayer and petition is important, even when we aren’t sure if our prayers will be answered. But have you ever wondered why not all of our prayers get answered? (more…)

God Speaks. Are You Listening? (Proverbs 28:9)

“If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.” (Prov. 28:9)

Obedience to the Lord is a direct conduit to our effectiveness in communicating with Him. God has a voice, and in the Bible you’ll see that there are a variety of ways in which He chooses to speak to us. Are we willing to listen? (more…)

Call On Him (Psalm 145:18-20)

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” (Psa. 145:18-20)

Psalm 145 has so many amazing truths, and the Lord spoke to me about many situations in my life throughout its different verses. It made it hard to pick just one to share some thoughts on today! That said, verses 18-20 reminds me of his faithfulness. (more…)

Where Does My Help Come From? (Psalm 121:1-8)

“I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psa. 121:1-8)

This is such a perfect passage for my family and I based on a pretty serious medical situation that came up yesterday. (more…)

Lord Save Me! (Psalm 116:3-4)

“The chords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the Lord: Lord, save me!” (Psa. 116:3-4)

While the psalmist is likely crying out on the verge of actual death, the principle of calling on the name of the Lord during any difficulties in our life remains the same. When we are going through rough times, do we immediately call on the name of the Lord and ask for His help, or do we rather rely on our own wisdom and strength to try to push through? (more…)
