When Bad Things Happen (John 9:2-3)

“His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.'” (John 9:2-3)

“Why do bad things happen to good people?” This is a very popular cosmic question that tries to assign blame for any number of reasons we may find ourselves in difficult life situations. (more…)

“It Is I; Don’t Be Afraid” (John 6:18-21)

“A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. But he said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid.’ Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” (John 6:18-21)

There’s a popular saying that states: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” This is a call for people to depend on their own strength and to just “push through” their circumstances and “hang in there.” But fortunately God gives us a better way! (more…)

For In You I Take Refuge (Psalm 16:1-2)

When I opened my Email this morning, the Daily Bible Verse I got from theDailyBibleVerse.org said:

“Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.'” (Psa. 16:1-2)

Funny, because I also ran into these verses this morning before I even saw that Email:

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.” (Psa. 118:8)

“Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man, who cannot save.” (Psa. 146:3) (more…)

In His Hands (Psalm 138:6-8)

“Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever- do not abandon the works of your hands.” (Psa. 138:6-8)

Although my family is going through a worrisome situation with my wife’s health right now, the Lord is faithful to send daily reminders through His Word that He is walking with us, and will not leave us nor forsake us! (more…)

My Soul Waits (Psalm 130:5-6)

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (Psa. 130:5-6)

This is a moving comparison to watchmen or sentinels, whose job was to laboriously watch and guard throughout the night, from dusk till dawn. The author captures the weight of their weariness and burden as he repeats “more than watchmen wait for the morning… more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (more…)
