Happy Memorial Day! On the last Monday of each May, the United States celebrates all men and women who have died while serving in the US military. These men and women have given their lives to stand for something that is important to them, something they felt was worth fighting for.
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:18)
I love my wife and children and I make it a habit to tell each of them that at least daily. But imagine if I verbally told them I love them, yet I ignored them, didn’t lead them or care for them as a husband and father should, or even worse, abused them?
“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11)
When my children, wife, and I come together for family prayer and choose our own topics, one that seems to come up consistently is “God, help me to not be so selfish. Help me to love others as myself.”
“As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.” (Joshua 11:15)
Thankfully it’s very rare when this happens, but yesterday our children disobeyed and continued to use their iPad after their mom clearly told them to stop. Because of that they were disciplined and also lost some privileges they would have gained for later that day, had they been obedient to our instruction. (more…)
