A Response of Love (Joshua 11:15)

“As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.” (Joshua 11:15)

Thankfully it’s very rare when this happens, but yesterday our children disobeyed and continued to use their iPad after their mom clearly told them to stop. Because of that they were disciplined and also lost some privileges they would have gained for later that day, had they been obedient to our instruction. (more…)

Children of Peace and Delight (Proverbs 29:17)

“Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.” (Prov. 29:17)

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about both the kids being on holiday school break and my wife and I being on holiday work break, is that we’ve been able to spend more time praying and talking about the Lord with them. (more…)

Temptation & Sin (Proverbs 5:21-23)

“For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.” (Prov. 5:21-23)

Proverbs 5 is a warning against adultery, and really against sexual immorality in general. (more…)

Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23-27)

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” (Prov. 4:23-27)

This is great instruction, and as Proverbs 4:13 says, “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” But I’ll be honest, a lot of this is really hard to do. Actually, it’s impossible to consistently follow this and the other instruction given throughout Proverbs (let alone in the rest of the Bible), on our own. (more…)

Raising Them Right (Proverbs 22:6)

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

Someone from my men’s group at work shared a story this morning in our chat room about his son coming home from school, learning curse words from his classmates. His son was confessing to the dad that he knew it was wrong and shouldn’t be saying those words, but he was having a hard time stopping. (more…)
