Your Whole Heart

“Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart.” (Psalm 119:2)

Have you ever truly sought after something with your whole heart? I think it’s rare when people actually do.

That’s why I try to refrain from using phrases like, “I put my heart and soul into it!” or “…with every fiber of my being!” because I feel like more often than not, it’s just hyperbole. But in this longest chapter of the Bible (Psalm 119) and throughout all of Scripture, you’ll see that God actually does want us to seek Him with a healthy obsession that permeates every part of us and our lives.

Deuteronomy 6:5-6 says to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.” In other words you’ll know that you truly love God above all else, when it manifests in your emotion, spirit, and devotion. You’ll also know by your commitment to His Word.

Love for another grows and develops over time– it ebbs and flows as we learn more about the object of our love and develop our relationship with them. I say this because you may not be at that “whole heart” level yet, and that’s okay. God is both gracious and patient, and He knows your heart even better than you know it yourself. Continue to make the effort in drawing near to God, and He will surely draw near to you (James 4:8).

My prayer for each of you reading this, including myself, is that we would be so overwhelmed with our love for Jesus that we desire nothing else other than to wholeheartedly seek Him and His Word. The blessings of a life fulfilled by His joy, contentment, peace, and purpose lie on the other side!
